Career Services

The mission of CAREER SERVICES is to help UMD students and alumni develop, evaluate, and implement their career plans.

Services and Resources

Career Counseling - Counselors can help students with all aspects of the career/life planning process, from choosing a major to carrying out a job search. Counselors assist students in gathering information about themselves and occupations and relating the information to career choice. Contact the office to make an appointment.

GoldPASS - an online resource linking students and alumni to employment and internship experiences. All students and alumni are eligible to register with Career Services using GoldPASS. Registration gives students the opportunity to have their resumes included in a database searchable by employers at their request and to be eligible for on-campus interviews. GoldPASS is sponsored by the University of Minnesota systemwide Career Services offices.

On-campus Interviewing - On-campus interviews are scheduled for students seeking internships before they graduate or employment after graduation. A number of organizations participate each year in on-campus recruiting. See On-Campus Interviewing for more information. Check with Career Services for schedules and up-to-date information.

Testing - Career Services is the regional testing center for national, state, and local testing programs. Information on graduate school admission tests such as the GRE, GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, OAT and PCAT and other professional school and national licensure and certification examinations is available at the office.

Career Resource Center (CRC) - The CRC has books, pamphlets, magazines, and videos with information on:

  • Employer profiles
  • Internships
  • Employment outlook
  • International opportunities
  • Salary statistics
  • Graduate school programs

The materials are useful to determine career direction, research occupations and employers, and prepare for interviews. Come in and browse! Help using the University of Minnesota's e-Portfolio is also available.

Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) - MCIS is a comprehensive web based career and educational planning guide to help Minnesotans of all ages explore their options. MCIS includes self-assessment activities which identify potential job titles and information on:

Occupations
Study and training options
State and national schools
Financial aid
Job search

Employment and Internship Listings - Career Services makes available, through GoldPASS, listings of employment opportunities for graduates, and internships for practical, on-the-job experience for current students.

Alumni Contacts - Alumni in many career fields may discuss their backgrounds and career choices with students. For more information, or if you wish to conduct informational interviews or participate in "career shadowing," contact a career counselor.

Employer Presentations - Representatives of employers discuss career opportunities within their organizations and distribute company information. Check with Career Services for scheduled presentations.

InterviewStream - InterviewStream is a web-based video practice interviewing system free to UMD students and alumni and available through the Career Services' web site. Students and alumni can see and hear themselves answer any of 1500+ practice interview questions and view expert interview tips and advice. Visit InterviewStream to get started.
