Exploring Your Career and Educational Options
Once you have completed your self assessment, your next step is to explore occupations. You can then make decisions about which careers best fit your interests, values, skills, and abilities.
There are four basic ways to explore your career options:
- Read about careers.
- Listen to talks or presentations about careers.
- Talk with people about their careers.
- Secure a job, cooperative education position, volunteer experience or an internship.
The following suggestions may assist you in your career exploration:
- Attend the Job Fairs and Graduate and Professional School Day sponsored by Career Services.
- Read written career information available in the Career Resource Center located in Career Services.
- Participate in Career Services workshops and programs.
- Try out a career by obtaining a part time, and/or summer job consistent with your interests.
- Perform volunteer work in your field(s) of interest.
- Gather first-hand information about subject areas from faculty and administrators and through survey courses in major areas of study.
- Initiate informational interviews with various career professionals.
- Interview alumni involved in various career fields.
- Consult with Career Services' counselors.
